EPSCO Health Council on Youth Mental Health in the Digital Age
The EPSCO Health Council calls for greater efforts to protect the mental health of children and teenagers in the digital era. In its landmark conclusions, the Council addresses the growing mental health challenges faced by young people in digital environments. Acknowledging both the benefits and risks of digital technology, it calls for action to prevent harm caused by excessive screen time, manipulative design, online violence, and disinformation. The Council urges Member States to promote digital literacy, healthy lifestyle habits, and stronger protections for minors, both online and offline.
Key measures included early education, policy regulations targeting harmful content and platforms, parental support, and encouraging age-appropriate media use. The conclusions also highlight evidence of a positive correlation between physical exercise, mental health, and cognitive processes, emphasizing that physical activity remains one of the most effective factors in maintaining both physical and mental well-being throughout life especially in the digital age.
The Council stresses the importance of collaboration across sectors and calls on tech providers to take greater responsibility through “child protection by design.” This initiative sets a strong direction toward a safer, healthier digital future for Europe’s youth.
