X23 Science in Society delivers the first of three workshops with pilot participants using the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology and tools

On 25 September, Marika Mazzi Boém and Nicole Zecchini, Certified Facilitators in the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology at X23 Science in Society, delivered a dedicated workshop for participants in the SportsWithoutBorders piloting activities that took place in Mozzo during the summer.

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP) is a hands-on, facilitated method in which participants build three-dimensional metaphorical models with LEGO® bricks to explore complex ideas, systems and identities. Applied to identity, whether of an individual, a team or an organisation, it moves self-reflection from abstract words into tangible, physical expressions.

Within the SportsWithoutBorders project, the methodology was used to work with refugee youth on their identity. The session began with an introduction to the bricks and the building technique through a series of structured activities designed to help participants become familiar and comfortable with the method. Participants were then asked to reflect on what makes them feel good and at ease, and on who they are and who they would like to become and learn in the future.

Among the key concepts that emerged during the Italian workshop: “overcoming life’s difficulties to access life’s valuable things”, “being with my friends in a safe space”, “having a peaceful space in my house where I can relax”, “playing and being with my friends”.

The workshop offered a valuable opportunity for participants to express their identity and aspirations in a tangible way and for the project partners to also see how sport naturally features in what young people enjoy and make them feel good.
