New EU Anti-Racism Strategy
On 20 January, the European Commission unveiled a renewed EU Anti-Racism Strategy, underscoring its determination to create a society in which racism has no place and all individuals are able to participate equally and reach their full potential. The initiative follows on from the EU Anti-Racism Action Plan 2020–2025, which has helped advance efforts to address racial discrimination and integrate anti-racism principles across a wide range of EU policies.
Despite the progress achieved so far, racism remains widespread, with recent Eurobarometer data showing that almost two-thirds of Europeans perceive racial discrimination as common in their country. To address this, the new strategy introduces wide-ranging actions to combat racism in all its forms, including stronger enforcement of EU equality laws, the removal of structural barriers, greater inclusion in areas such as education, employment, healthcare and housing, and enhanced cooperation between public authorities, civil society and other stakeholders, with particular attention given to protecting individuals from hate crime and hate speech, including in sport.
