Nine EU Member States call for review of EU funding criteria for international sports organisations

On 14 July, the sports ministers of nine EU Member States—Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Sweden—sent a joint letter to European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport Glenn Micallef calling for a review of EU funding provided to international sports organisations. The ministers argue that organisations receiving support through EU programmes should uphold the Union’s fundamental values and suggest that funding should be reconsidered for organisations that have readmitted Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions. The letter specifically refers to EU funding under programmes such as Erasmus+.

The initiative highlights the role of EU institutions in shaping the governance framework surrounding sport funding. While the European Commission has not announced any follow-up action, the letter brings renewed attention to the relationship between EU financial support and governance standards in international sport. The proposal may contribute to future discussions on the principles and conditions governing EU funding for sport organisations.
