MEPs called on the European Commission to take a firmer stance toward FIFA over how World Cup tickets are being sold. A group of 23 Members of the European Parliament have raised concerns that FIFA, as the sole official seller of World Cup tickets, may effectively control the secondary ticketing market as well.
They question whether this level of control could amount to an abuse of a dominant market position. In particular, the lawmakers are asking the Commission to assess whether fans are being given enough clear and transparent information to make informed purchasing decisions, or if key details are being withheld.
Their concerns echo a recent complaint submitted by consumer advocacy group Euroconsumers together with Football Supporters Europe. The organizations allege that FIFA has used its monopoly over ticket sales to set excessively high prices and impose purchasing terms that lack transparency and fairness, ultimately disadvantaging fans.
