EU Sport Forum 2026 took place in Cyprus
The 2026 edition of the EU Sport Forum took place in Paphos, Cyprus, on 15–16 April, bringing together representatives of European sport organisations, EU institutions, and public authorities to discuss current developments and priorities in EU sport policy. ENGSO was represented by Secretary General Theo Neyenhuis, Office Director Marie Denitton, EU Advisory Committee member Petra Gantnerova, and ENGSO Youth Managing Director Tiago Guilherme.
As the European Commission’s main platform for structured dialogue with the sport sector, the Forum covered topics including the European Sport Model, governance, mental health, gender equality, and investment in sport. Grassroots sport was referenced in several discussions, particularly in relation to its role in participation, community engagement, volunteering, and the broader social impact of sport clubs. However, discussions largely remained at a general level, with limited space for in-depth exchange due to time constraints and structured formats.
The programme also reflected strong representation of the Olympic Movement, including contributions from athletes, highlighting its visibility within the European sport policy landscape. Erasmus+ Sport was confirmed as a key EU funding instrument, although stakeholders noted increasing competition for funding applications. Several interventions also underlined the interdependence between elite and grassroots sport, particularly in relation to participation pathways, community development, and the wider societal impact of sporting success.
Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport Glenn Micallef addressed participants, highlighting the role of sport in health, resilience, and social cohesion, while also acknowledging broader challenges affecting the sector. The Forum further provided an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange views ahead of upcoming EU sport policy developments, including the future Strategic Vision for Sport in Europe and discussions on EU sport funding beyond 2027.
