European Commission Publishes Results of Consultation on the European Sport Model
The European Commission has published the summary report of its public consultation on “A Strategic Vision for Sport in Europe: Reinforcing the European Sport Model.” The consultation gathered more than 200 responses from stakeholders including sport organisations, public authorities, academics, NGOs, athletes, and citizens, providing input on the future direction of European sport policy.
The results show broad support for preserving the core principles associated with the European Sport Model. Around 80% of respondents agreed that the EU should play a stronger role in protecting elements such as solidarity between professional and grassroots sport, open competitions based on sporting merit, and the autonomy of sport organisations. Grassroots sport was repeatedly identified as a central pillar of the model, with respondents highlighting its contribution to participation, social inclusion, volunteering, education, and community development across Europe.
Stakeholders also raised concerns about growing financial disparities between elite and grassroots sport, declining levels of volunteering, integrity and governance challenges, and the increasing commercialisation of sport. Many respondents stressed the need for stronger investment and support measures for grassroots organisations to ensure long-term sustainability and equal access to sport opportunities. The findings will contribute to the European Commission’s strategic vision for sport in Europe, expected by the end of 2026, which aims to define future priorities for EU sport policy and reinforce the social and educational role of sport.
