European Commission publishes work programme for 2026

The European Commission has released its Work Programme for 2026, outlining the key legislative and non-legislative initiatives, ongoing proposals, and pending measures that will shape EU policy in the year ahead. President Ursula von der Leyen presented the programme to the European Parliament plenary, describing it as Europe’s “independence moment.” The document prioritises completing the single market by 2028, strengthening competitiveness and job creation, modernising the labour market, supporting farmers and fishers, advancing sustainability through the circular economy, and enhancing the EU’s capacity to respond to global crises such as those in Ukraine and Gaza. Reactions from Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) were mixed: some emphasised the connection between public health and competitiveness, with a focus on youth mental health, women’s health, and cardiovascular well-being (S&D), while others called for reinforced regional funding under the Multiannual Financial Framework (EPP) and stronger anti-corruption measures (Renew).
