Sport included in the European Commission’s Strategy on Intergenerational Fairness
The European Commission’s new Strategy on Intergenerational Fairness highlights the important role that sport can play in building stronger connections between generations and creating more inclusive societies. The strategy specifically calls for strengthening the intergenerational fairness dimension within future EU youth and sport policies, including through the post-2027 EU Youth Strategy and the future EU Work Plan for Sport.
The strategy also recognises sport organisations as important spaces for fostering inspiration, connection, and mutual care between generations. Among the proposed actions are initiatives promoting intergenerational activities through sport, improving access to physical activity for all ages, and introducing a new “across generations” category within the #BeActive EU Sport Awards.
Importantly, the strategy states that strong cultural and sport policies play a central role in advancing intergenerational fairness, social inclusion, participation, solidarity, and shared values across age groups.
ENGSO Youth welcomes this recognition and sees it as an important step towards strengthening the role of grassroots sport in EU youth, social, and participation policies in the years ahead.
