Update of the EU Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021-2030
On 23 October, the European Parliament’s Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL) approved a report outlining the EU’s future direction for disability policy beyond 2024. This document takes stock of the existing 2021-2030 Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and urges stronger integration of disability inclusion throughout all areas of EU policymaking.
The report places special emphasis on the role of sport as a driver of inclusion. It calls on the European Commission and Member States to ensure that people with disabilities have access to inclusive sporting programmes, adapted infrastructure, and qualified personnel, while encouraging participation from grassroots to elite levels. These initiatives are also linked to broader social inclusion in education, culture, and recreation.
After adoption in committee, the proposal will move forward for a plenary vote in the European Parliament on 24 November, where all Members of Parliament will decide on its final approval.
