Workshop at the Vallecas Refugee Center (CAR)
The workshop involved not only the residents but also the center’s staff responsible for recreational and sporting activities with the host population. Key ideas highlighted included the value of sport in normalizing the lives of the residents and as a cohesive element among the different groups, both men and women, although the participation of women remains one of the most significant challenges.
This activity, along with the “Sport Without Borders” project, is part of the intervention program in Madrid with refugee and asylum-seeker populations that Red Deporte has been carrying out for two decades. The activity with the CAR (Refugee and Asylum Seeker Center) focuses on promoting sport as a tool to improve the residents’ self-confidence within their immediate social environment (in the neighborhood) and in the wider community.
